Press Release, 8 March, 2018

More than 100 years ago on March 8, 1917, women working in the textile factories in Petrograd — then the Russian capital — led a historic protest on International Women's Day. Their actions contributed to the spark that lit the Russian Revolution which overthrew the oppressive rule of Tsar Nicholas II, and ended the Romanov dynasty and the Russian Empire. Their revolutionary actions paved the way for the formation of a truly equal, worker controlled government and society.

PSC Press Statement 31 January 2018

Ahed Tamimi is a 16-year-old Palestinian girl who was arrested after a video of her slapping an Israeli soldier went viral. The slap was in response to a group of Israeli soldiers attempting to forcibly enter her home, allegedly to use her house as a vantage point for intimidating other Palestinian children in the area with gunfire. Soldiers had entered the village of Nabi Saleh and had been shooting rubber bullets, sound-bombs and teargas canisters that had shattered several windows in her home. Ahed’s 15-year-old cousin, Mohammed Tamimi had minutes before, been shot in the face with a rubber-coated metal bullet at close range that penetrated his skull. Ahed was arrested three days after the “slap incident” in a pre-dawn raid on her home on 19 December 2017, has been denied bail and remains in detention.

MWASA statement on recent developments at the SABC

Media Workers Association of South Africa press statement 26 October 2017

The SABC remains of critical importance in the lives of millions of South Africans, the majority of whom, in their dehumanizing poverty and abject squalor, rely solely on the SABC for their information, education and entertainment needs.

In the current socio-political and economic environment, an effective public broadcaster is not a 'nice-to-have' but a necessity at least as in comparison with the South African Airways. It fulfills a far more seminal public mandate and should be supported.

Support the Shoprite 8 – Boycott Shoprite Pelican Park

Recently 8 cashiers were dismissed by Shoprite at their Pelican Park store. The workers were accused of theft after accepting tips from customers. Even though there was no money missing from their tills and tips have been allowed for several years, the Shoprite manager, Mr Bardien, handcuffed the workers (all women) and called the SAPS to arrest them. They were handcuffed standing for four hours and while using the toilet as if they were common criminals. One worker was pregnant. They were then taken in full view of the public in an SAPS van, charged and are appearing in court for theft of company money for amounts ranging from R20–R30. This was their money that they got from customers as tips.
