Since the widespread outbreak of xenophobic violence in many townships in 2008, it seems to have become a feature of service delivery protests in working class communities.
What starts out as a protest against poor service delivery in terms of housing issues or crime and inadequate policing often escalates into violence and looting that targets spaza shops owned by African or Asian migrants.
