The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), one of the largest and most powerful trade unions in the country, has recently been in the news again: for leading a five-month long strike at Sibanye Stillwater, ended last month, and for the Department of Labour’s threat to deregister the union. Some have speculated that this was due to the trade union’s strike activity in the mining industry and opposition to Cosatu-affiliated and ANC-aligned, National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

In this week’s edition of Workers on Wednesday, we explore this development and more broadly the role of the state in regulating trade unions.
