NUMSA press statement 21 August 2018

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) dips it red revolutionary banner in mourning the passing away of comrade Fieldmore Mapeto also affectionately known as “Phopho”. He passed away on Thursday evening on the 16th of August, 2018. He had been unwell for a while.

The entire leadership of NUMSA, all shopstewrads and members and supporters of the union mourn this consistent Marxist-Leninist revolutionary, trade unionist and devout family man. We will miss his authoritative and well-argued defense of the working class struggle against capitalism, and for Socialism.

Comrade Phopho was a Marxist-Leninist and a true red revolutionary who put his life on the line to defeat not only the abominable Apartheid system, but for the struggle for a Socialist World, Socialist Africa and indeed for a Socialist South Africa.

He had an unflinching belief in the organized revolutionary power of the working class and in its ability to transform society for Socialism. For the most part, the last two decades of his life were spent serving the black and African working class majority at NUMSA.

The National Office Bearers send their deeply felt condolences and sympathies to all our members, his family and all his closest friends.
