27 October JOHANNESBURG – Despite the announcement on Monday by the university management that they’d agreed with the SRC to re-open Wits today, students re-asserted the blockade of entrances to the main campus in Braamfontein in support of #Endoutsourcing. Private security and then police were called. As protesters retreated, the police arrested one student and tossed a series of stun grenades at their feet. The needless violence of the arrest and grenades only served to rally the protest with the added support of workers and the university’s main road was blocked. Confrontation with the police was headed off by the scrambled intervention of academics and the vice chancellor, Adam Habib with members of his executive committee, came down to the street to negotiate with the protesters.
The arrested student was taken to Hillbrow police station and released late in the afternoon.
