For the past two decades, South Africa’s state owned enterprises (SOEs) have been beset with crises. These include Eskom, SAA, PRASA and the SA Post Office and others. This has had a direct and negative impact on the country, especially the people and the economy. However, workers at these SOEs have had additional demands put on them while their jobs become more insecure. The strike underway in South African Airways for salary increases and job security challenges the misconception that a job in the public service is cushy. In today’s show we discuss the crises in SOEs, its impact on labour and their responses.
