Africa Labor Media Project
Building media power for the labour movement across Africa.
This project expands our work across Africa as a solidarity effort, partnering with trade union federations in over 10 countries. Through media and collaboration, it strengthens worker organising and communication across the continent.
Our radio programmes have been broadcast on Channel Africa and public broadcasters in Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, and Malawi, with strong leadership support particularly in Uganda. However, expansion has been constrained by limited organisational and financial resources.
To ensure sustainability, we are working with ITUC-Africa to transition project coordination to their offices in Lomé, Togo.
Project Aim
The project focuses on building media capacity within trade unions through weekly labour radio shows that educate workers, raise awareness, and support organising efforts.
Countries Involved
Media & Broadcasting
Since inception, the project has maintained a strong relationship with Channel Africa through an annually renewed agreement to produce the weekly show Mshikamano, meaning unity and cohesion.
The programme has also aired on South African community radio stations and as a monthly live show on SAFM’s Workers on Wednesday. Attempts to expand into European broadcasters have not been successful.
Key Topics Covered
