Housing and service delivery protests that escalate into violence have been frequent over many years and it is well known that South Africa has a serious housing shortage. In Cape Town, this has been made worse by hundreds of evictions due to the gentrification of areas close to the city and the inability of people to pay rent for government’s new social housing projects.

This crisis is not new, with millions of people homeless or sheltered in shacks going back to the Apartheid era. The housing crisis is getting worse with no solution in sight. What is to be done?
