For the past year, public sector trade unions and their employer, the South African government, have been locked in negotiations for their salary increases. These negotiations take place every three years and the agreement is effective for the same length of time. There is once again a danger of settlement not being reached and possible strike action that could cripple the public service. This is likely to impact severely on South Africans, especially the poor and most vulnerable.
