Trade unions and farmworker organisations condemn #BlackMonday as racist

The Cosatu in the Western Cape has condemned the protest march by farmers on Monday. The protest was organised by AgriSA, Freedom Front+ and Afri-Forum. According to the statement released by Cosatu WC on Tuesday, the protest was racist and to be protesting ‘farm attacks’ and not ‘attacks that take place on farms’ “is an attempt to politicise the violence and isolate it to one group”.

Trade union accuses police of colluding with farmers

CSAAWU has accused the South African Police Services of colluding with farm owners when it comes to farmworkers laying charges against farmowners. This comes after a farmworker was taken to a deserted place and threatened with violence and death following a break-in at a farmer’s house in Paarl.

Robertson Winery workers on strike

Workers at Robertson Winery are on strike calling on the winery to pay them R8,500 a month.
The workers, who protested outside the winery say they are currently earning between R2,900 and R3,500 a month before deductions, according to Karel Swartz, deputy general secretary of the Commercial, Stevedoring and Allied Workers’ Union (CSAAWU).

Abattoir workers win unfair dismissal case on appeal

Robertson Abattoir workers have successfully appealed a Labour Court judgment in their case of unfair dismissal.
The Labour Court’s ruling against the workers last year was set aside recently by the Labour Appeal Court and the workers’ case will now be sent back to that court.
